Resume Cover Letter Travel Industry

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts an average growth in the number of jobs for travel agents of about 10 percent through 2020. The combination of job openings predicted and the education and work experience requirements for entry-level travel agents may appeal to many job seekers. To stand out among other applicants, your cover letter must highlight your special attributes, such as customer service and communication skills, both of which factor significantly into a travel agent's success.

Compose an introductory paragraph that states your interest in the job and how you learned about the position. If you have a significant amount of work experience and the job requires it, mention that in your opening paragraph. For example, you could write, "I'm interested in learning more about the travel agent position with your company, posted December 26, 2012, on Indeed.com. For the past 10 years, I've been a corporate travel agent with Acme Corporation, and I am looking for new opportunities with a specialty travel agency such as Island Tours. My resume is enclosed for your review."

Use bullet points to describe your core competencies -- organizational skills and logistics planning; communication skills; attention to detail and time management; and customer service and conflict resolution.

Construct your bullet points so they capture some of the keywords and phrases in the job posting. For example, you could write, "Adept at organizing travel plans for individuals, families and groups with 25-plus members; excellent proficiency with automated airline reservation systems, ticketing applications and flight requirements; maintain 55 percent repeat customer rate in the last seven consecutive years of my 10-year career."

Describe additional qualifications in a third paragraph, such as work experience and training. Include descriptions about destinations that you're particularly familiar with and foreign languages that you speak. For example, say, "During my career, I've traveled to 18 countries and assisted clients with business and leisure travel plans to 54 cities in the United States and 26 countries."

Incorporate your certifications into the narrative, such as a professional designation from the International Airline Transport Association Training and Development Institute or travel counselor certification through the Travel Institute. Also, if you're certified through The Travel Institute and submitted a white paper -- part of the certification requirements -- that's particularly relevant to the job you're applying for, so include the paper's title.

Close your letter by restating your interest in learning more about the job. Refrain from saying you're the perfect candidate -- at this point, all you can honestly say is that you're interested in exploring the opportunity. Ask for a personal interview and state a time when you will follow up with a phone call to schedule one. Include your contact information in the last paragraph.

Travel agents earned a median annual salary of $36,460 in 2016, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. On the low end, travel agents earned a 25th percentile salary of $27,030, meaning 75 percent earned more than this amount. The 75th percentile salary is $48,600, meaning 25 percent earn more. In 2016, 81,700 people were employed in the U.S. as travel agents.
